Mr. Pip sort-of reviewed in the New York Times

New York Times book reviewer Janet Maslin seems to think that Lloyd Jones has invented the island of Bougainville for his Booker Prize short-listed novel Mr Pip:

The children of Bougainville, the island that Mr. Jones locates in the vicinity of Papua New Guinea, learn to treat Pip as a mixture of deity, best friend and rock star.

I wonder where on a map Ms Maslin would locate the USA?

Did she not even read the press release that came with the book?

It’s pretty crazy because, if you don’t realise the whole Bougainville situation is based on reality, you mis-read the whole book.

Which is what she’s done.
