Whirlpool

Above, a typically arresting image from Preminger’s 1950 Whirlpool. My pal Bill R. took my advice (which is sometimes good) and checked it out recently, and has some typically engaging and astute thoughts on the picture over at his always-intriguing blog. Check ’em out.

  • Ed Howard says:

The conversation over there has also developed into a good debate about Preminger in general, for those who are interested.

  • Ryan Kelly says:

It’s a piercing piece of analysis, to be sure, and Ed Howard’s insights are always fascinating. It happens every time over there… he and Ed build a fascinating conversation, and I show up a day late and a dollar short. Oh well. Maybe next time I’ll acutally have seen the movie they decide to discuss!

  • bill says:

Thanks very much for the plug, Glenn. And Ryan’s correct: Ed has gotten much deeper into Preminger in the comments than I do in the original post. He humbles me.
But, Glenn, you’re advice was indeed good. I loved the film, and am becoming a bit rabid about Preminger. On to “Bonjour Tristesse” and “Bunny Lake is Missing” (after I’ve read the source novel for the latter).

  • Ryan Kelly says:

I never said Ed went deeper than you did with your post! It was a good read, and the comments have expanded the discussion. It’s what blogging is all about. But don’t take it as some kind of back-handed insult at you. But yes, Ed could probably out-articulate us all any day of the week, and twice on Sunday.

  • bill says:

Oh, no, I knew you weren’t insulting me. I was just admitting to something beyond what you said.

  • Ed Howard says:

Bill, you sell yourself short. There’s a reason I love commenting at your site, you always provide some very interesting conversations.
OK, enough of the circle jerk/group hug…
Glenn, on the topic of Preminger, I see that a new DVD of Rosebud has been released in the UK. Any word on the quality of that disc? Or, for that matter, of the film, which is part of Preminger’s much-maligned late period but which I’m very curious about anyway.

  • Gorilla Bob says:

I’m a Preminger fan, despite his flaws. I love “Advise & Consent,” still the best film on Washington, and I’m even a fan, if that’s the right word, of “Skidoo” (Still waiting for the deluxe Dvd version, replete with audio commentary by Carol Channing and whoever else is still alive). Saw “Rosebud” way back when, can’t recall what I thought, but his stuff is always worth a look. His short autobio is pretty amusing too.
