Speaking of my being mean-spirited, over at The Auteurs’ I have a little fun charting the anatomy of an Armond White backpedal, and finding unusual affinities between one of the greatest of 20th-century authors and one of the more smug, pompous and prolix presences in the film blogosphere. That’s me—making friends wherever I go. The Topics/Questions/Exercises of the week are up now.

It is indeed hilarious to see Armond reverse out of a sensible opinion in real time. And his presence at the top of the NY Film Critics Circle is a continuation of the truly inexplicable respect he’s accorded in many circles. I still remember the Slate Movie Club where White walked in, took a dump in the punchbowl, and called everyone a buncha morons, and then the other critics wasted the rest of the week pondering whether punch should be shit in, rather than sensibly ignoring the crazy man yelling.
