1971: The Year That Music Changed Everything is streaming on AppleTV+

After giving David Hepworth a serve yesterday for his opinions about the films of 1971, it’s only fair to acknowledge that about music he was not wrong.
To prove it – or at least provide ample evidence in support – there is an eight episode series called 1971: The Year That Music Changed Everything, inspired by Hepworth’s book and produced by the same team that made the Academy Award-winning Amy Winehouse documentary1.
While you may not buy the narrative proposition you can’t fail but be impressed by the epic amount of research that has gone into the series. Some of the footage will be familiar – often presented in an enlightening context – but lots of it will be new and beguiling.
And it’s from Apple so it looks and sounds a treat. This is a good show to immerse yourself in for a while, especially if you were there the first time around.
Amy is just one of Asia Kapadia’s superb documentaries. I also recommend Senna (2010) about the Formula 1 racing driver and Diego Maradona (2019) about … Maradona. Amy and Senna are digital rentals from Apple (and shortly I hope from AroVision) and Maradona is streaming on DocPlay.
