…with their masochism and the stuff they'll do on a dare…
The above arresting image is from Maurice Pialat's debut feature, L'Enfance-Nue, a stone masterpiece that belongs aside The 400 Blows and Kes in the pantheon of great movies about male childhood…although it's significantly different from either film. I look at it in a little more detail at today's Foreign Region DVD Report, over at The Auteurs.
Had the great pleasure of seeing a beautiful print of this at MoMA. Like most Pialat, it’s raw and stunning, and a little bit like being hit by a car.
And I would’ve never guessed that was a still from it. Weird.
If only someone would release the MOC Pialat titles in Region 1!
I’ll take DVDs from any region — and at any cost — of WE WON’T GROW OLD TOGETHER and GRADUATE FIRST. They can’t come soon enough!
