Mason

Bored James Mason wants his mom to leave him alone so he can roll a die or two…

Pre dice

As he shakes the tumbler and turns it, a table leg and a rug appear…

Toss

Out comes the die, flying across the table…

Dice

But wait, why’s that tennis ball following it…

Dog path

…and what’s with Mr. Winkle chasing after it…

Girl

…not to mention the girl grabbing Mr. Winkle’s leg…

A peculiar visual flourish from 1943’s The Man In Grey, directed by Leslie Arliss. The girl is Phyllis Calvert. From Criterion/Eclipse’s very entertaining box set Three Wicked Melodramas From Gainsborough Pictures

Love it. Got this set for my birthday last week after seeing The Wicked Lady in a melodrama film class and having an absolute blast with it. So glad Criterion released these. Also Margaret Lockwood is crazy hot.
