Over at the Auteur's Notebook, I outline my theory as to why the crazy 1970 Czech fantasy Valerie and Her Week of Wonders is an exemplary Halloween film. Whatever scary movies you're watching tonight, have a blast.

I DVRed a whole pantload of movies from TCM last night, like “Mr. Sardonicus”, “Torture Garden” and “Dead of Night”. That’s probably what I’ll be up to. I wish there was a good haunted house in my area, since I kind of have a hankerin’ for one of those. Maybe there is, and I just don’t know it.
I’ve always had great trouble staying awake during Valerie and Her Week of Wonders, though when I wake up after napping for a few minutes, the resulting images are certainly startling.
