What an extraordinary life and career.
To cite just one example: James Dean properly gets credit for “East of Eden”. But his accomplishment would have been impossible without Julie Harris’ profound incarnation of infinitely loving patience.
When she, as Abra, begs the father (Raymond Massey) of Dean’s character, Cal, to reconcile with him so that he can rise to genuine manhood, this is one of the most transcendent pieces of acting in film history.
You can sometimes find on eBay a DVD of a Hallmark Hall of Fame broadcast of Ms. Harris in The Lark with Karloff, Rathbone, Jack Warden and others.

Revisited “Eden” tonight, and you couldn’t be more right. The lunchtime scene between Harris and Dean is so fluid, heartfelt and natural, a real joy to watch.
