My great friend the brilliant guitarist and songwriter Gary Lucas is enacting one of his if-not-now than soon-to-be legendary Beefheart Seminars, this Friday April 8 at 8 p.m. at Brooklyn's Knitting Factory, and he has very kindly asked me to participate; I shall be reading a Beefheart text ( I'll withhold the title, but just say that since I got asked early, I got to pick a goodie) as a way of sharing my appreciation of the late Mr. Vliet, with whom Gary collaborated very closely in the latter part of his musical career. (He made the first recording of the finger-twisting opus "Flavor Bud Living" and, for a while, actually managed the fellow.) Also participating in the festivities will be another legend, Genesis Breyer P-Orridge, super-producer Hal Willner, Danny "Danny Says" Fields, Byron Coley, VIvien Goldman, Felice Rosser, and many more, including another friend of us all, Richard Peña of the FIlm Society of Lincoln Center. Come and enjoy and say hello, if'n yer in the neighborhood; should be a blast. In the meantime, enjoy the swinging sounds of the Captain and his Magic Band trying out "DIddy Wah Diddy" for America's arbiter of whether it's got a good beat and you can dance to it.

@ Evelyn: Yes, the “Dirty Washing,” EP, a fucking great record. “Launderette:” “I wanted ten pence for the dryer/That was how we met…” I worship that thing. Wish she’d recorded more, but in a way it was kind of a perfect DIY statement: to make one amazing record, then stop. Looking forward to seeing her again, we met at a Bob Christgau party years ago and we got on pretty well.
