Goodfellas (Scorsese, 1990)

Still from the film Goodfellas

This is a quick update today because it’s a three film day at the cinema – and one of them is Ridley Scott’s three-hour Napoleon.

I’m just going to intervene in your mailbox to alert you that Martin Scorsese’s masterpiece Goodfellas is now streaming on Netflix in New Zealand.

You probably don’t need me to tell you why you should watch it, or even what it’s about, but I would suggest that it is a much better option than the 2016 Ben Affleck “thriller” The Accountant which is inexplicably the number two most watched movie on Netflix at the moment, a classic case of life imitating the algorithm imitating life.

I also recommend Glenn Kenny’s wonderful oral history of the making of the movie, Made Men, which you can get in a signed by the author version here, or order from your local independent bookshop.

For RNZ, I watched the original documentary version of Next Goal Wins (on DocPlay in Australia and New Zealand) and loved it. Taika had better not mess this story up.
