  I believe Hoberman com­pared Truffaut to Goddard as the dif­fer­ence between tal­ent and geni­us, but I’ve always pre­ferred Truffaut primar­ily because of his “work­ings of the heart”. After WEEKEND, with a few excep­tions, I’m watch­ing those movies and most of the time I don’t know what the fuck is going on. It seems sac­ri­lege to say you don’t really care for Goddard, so I’ll read about the movies and rewatch them and but I still don’t get it. I truly feel like a phil­istine who needs cliff notes for everything he’s pack­ing into his pic­tures. I can appre­ci­ate them on a filmic level, or intel­lec­tu­ally, and I can appre­ci­ate what he’s done his­tor­ic­ally for the medi­um, but they still leave me cold. On the oth­er hand, I can always revis­it Truffaut, and am always find­ing things that sur­prise me in his movies.

  An inter­est­ing take on a great, great film.
  Truffaut is my per­son­al favor­ite New Waver, and a lot of that has to do with this film and Stolen Kisses, both of which I used to watch obsessively.
  After read­ing this, I think I’m going to go watch it again…
