My friend Peter Labuza, proprietor of the site LabuzaMovies, has started a new venture, a podcast series, which is what all the kids are into nowadays. It's called The Cinephiliacs, and when Peter first pitched me on it he said he aspired to make it an equivalent of Marc Maron's "WTF" for film lovers. And speaking of WTF, Peter asked me to be his first guest. Seriously, though, it was an honor, and a fascinating and not labor-unintensive experience. We cover quite a bit of ground and I get quite a bit off of my chest—I don't recall if I cried or not, I might have—and while I'm gonna take a little break from myself before I listen to it, you don't have to. I’m about half an hour in, already LOLed (yessir, I said it) at the Steely Dan reference and Johnny Ramone anecdote. Great stuff.
You should start one called “Cinecrophiliacs” and have Richard Brody on for a debate.
Sorry for the off-topic post, Glenn, but I just wanted to say I really enjoyed reading your TDKR review over at MSN. I like your calm, measured approach to assessing the material, despite your apparent “superhero fatigue”.
And re: the apparent easing back from so-called “chaos cinema” (though I’ve never found Nolan’s work, overall, to be anywhere near as chaotic as, say, Marc Forster’s completely incoherent Quantum Of Solace, or the last two Bourne movies), hopefully Jim Emerson, over at Scanners, doesn’t offer up second-verse-same-as-the-first series of articles this time around. But part of me feels like he’d more likely to ease up if the general reviews were less glowing this time around, which doesn’t, thus far, seem to be the case.

Really had quite a wonderful time listening to this on the commute today. Among many other things, it made me think back to the first time I read that DFW article on David Lynch. It was back in high school (or was it junior high?) and I had no idea who Wallace was, but I was just starting to get into movies in general and Lynch in particular, and the notion that a magazine could publish an article like this – long, eccentric – on an artist I was just coming to revere, it totally fried my little brain. Anyway. It was a good listen. I also liked the extended riff on BLOW UP. This Labuza guy did his homework. Looking forward to where this podcast goes.

I was thinking the other day that the soon to be retired Steven Soderbergh would be the perfect person for a WTF like film podcast. All of his commentaries are dialogues with another filmmaker, so it would be an interesting listen to get him with another filmmaker, free of the commentary constraints. Just wishing out loud.
