Madeleine Fischer tries the cold shoulder on Franco Fabrizi in Michelangelo Antonioni's 1955 Le Amiche (The Girlfriends), a very delightful restored print of which opens at New York's Film Forum on Friday. It's a fascinating, masterful picture; I give it some consideration today over at the redoubtable Daily Notebook.
What does this have to do with the Charles Portis cult?
Not to hijack the thread, but speaking of foreign films, I’m curious of your take on this recent Empire list:

I haven’t commented on it, and I’m not sure I’m going to have the time to anytime soon. Anyway, the whole concept is confusing to this United States citizen: the Brits are foreigners, too, right? So what the heck are they talking about?
Here’s where I feel obligated to add an “ar ar ar” in case anyone thinks the above is meant in earnest. It’s the internet, you can never be too careful.
People will argue over any list, so I guess it’s best to just say it’s a great rental suggestion directory (and starting point to those that didn’t make the cut) for curious moviegoers with a Netflix account and a “What should I check out next?” attitude. For a lot of people outside of major metropolitan areas, these films were not conveniently available until recently.
And now I have to put THE GIRLFRIENDS on mine.
Any list of foreign films that would put Amelie at #2 isn’t even worth discussing.
I’ve not heard of this Antonioni, so I’ll be putting on my to-get list as well.
Ugh, that list opens with Night Watch at #100. Enough to know to ignore it.
I do appreciate where you’re coming from, Chris O., and there is quite a lot of gold amidst the pandering dross on that list. But any assessment that places “Leningrad Cowboys” next to “Andrei Rublev” is just too incoherent for me to engage with right now!
Understood. I’d rather they put “Shadows In Paradise” or “The Match Factory Girl” so one could eventually get to “Leningrad Cowboys,” rather than… ahhh you’re right. Yipes.
